Quick answer
Savings interest = deposit × annual rate × actual days deposited ÷ 365. For example, VND 100m at 5.5% a year for a 12-month term (365 days) earns VND 5,500,000. Rolling over with interest added to the principal means the next term earns interest on both (compounding).
How is savings interest calculated?
This calculator works out term-deposit interest the way Vietnamese banks do it: count the actual days between the deposit and maturity dates and divide by 365. Choose terms in months or days, interest at maturity or monthly, several consecutive terms with or without compounding, and preview how little interest you keep if you withdraw early.

How to calculate savings interest
- 1
Enter the deposit (100,000,000 or 100m) and the annual rate from your bank's rate sheet.
- 2
Choose a term in months or days, enter its length and the deposit date (today by default).
- 3
Choose interest at maturity or monthly (monthly payout usually has a slightly lower rate; enter the rate for that option).
- 4
To see savings over several years, enter the number of consecutive terms and choose “Add interest to principal” (compounding) or “Withdraw interest, roll principal”.
- 5
Read the interest, total, maturity date and the per-term table; open “Early withdrawal” to see the interest if you cash out early.
Actual days change the interest, even for “6 months”
| Deposit date | Maturity date | Days | Interest on VND 100m at 4.5% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 21 Oct 2026 | 21 Apr 2027 | 182 | VND 2,243,836 |
| 15 Jan 2026 | 15 Jul 2026 | 181 | VND 2,231,507 |
| 15 Jul 2026 | 15 Jan 2027 | 184 | VND 2,268,493 |

Interest = 100,000,000 × 4.5% × days ÷ 365, rounded to the dong.
Three ways to grow VND 100m over two years
| How you deposit | Total interest | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 6-month terms at 4.5%, interest added (4 terms) | VND 9,321,512 | Earlier interest earns more interest |
| 6-month terms at 4.5%, interest withdrawn (4 terms) | VND 9,012,328 | Principal stays at 100m |
| 12-month term at 5.5%, paid at maturity (1 year) | VND 5,500,000 | Longer terms usually pay higher rates |

Examples
VND 100m for 12 months
At 5.5% a year, deposited 21 Oct 2026 and maturing 21 Oct 2027 (365 days): interest VND 5,500,000, total VND 105,500,000.
Monthly interest to live on
VND 100m at 5.3% a year, 12-month term, monthly payout: about VND 450,137 in a 31-day month and less in shorter months; around 5.3m over the year with the principal untouched.
Withdrawing after 180 days
At a 0.1% demand rate you get only VND 49,315 in interest instead of millions for the full term. Consider a loan secured on the deposit instead.
Common misunderstandings
- Dividing the annual rate by 12 and multiplying by months.
- Banks use actual days ÷ 365, so a 6-month term can be 181, 182 or 184 days and the interest differs by tens of thousands of dong.
- Assuming a rollover keeps the old rate.
- On rollover the bank applies its current rate sheet on the maturity date. The multi-term table in the tool assumes the rate stays the same.
- Expecting term interest after an early withdrawal.
- Most banks pay only the demand rate (often 0.1%–0.5% a year) on early withdrawals, unless the product allows partial withdrawals.
How the calculator works
Each term: interest = opening balance × rate × actual days ÷ 365, rounded to the dong (Circular 14/2017/TT-NHNN allows a 365-day year). Maturity adds calendar months; the 31st rolls back to the last day of a shorter month.
Monthly payout: one row per month with the principal unchanged. Compounding rollover: next term's balance = principal + previous interest.
Glossary
- Term
- The committed deposit period (1, 3, 6, 12 months…); it ends on the maturity date.
- Rollover
- The bank automatically starts a new term on the maturity date if you do not withdraw.
- Compound interest
- Previous interest is added to the principal, so the next term earns interest on a larger amount.
- Demand rate
- The very low rate paid on current accounts or on savings withdrawn before maturity.
Frequently asked questions
How much interest does VND 100m earn in a year?
100m × annual rate × 365 ÷ 365. At 5.5% that is VND 5,500,000; at 6% it is VND 6,000,000. Enter your bank's actual rate for an exact figure.
Is interest at maturity or monthly better?
At maturity usually pays a higher rate. Monthly payout suits you if you need regular cash flow.
Is savings interest taxed in Vietnam?
No. Interest on deposits with credit institutions is exempt from personal income tax.
Why is my bank's figure a few dong different?
Rounding (per term or per day) or a different maturity date when it falls on a holiday. The gap is usually a few to a few hundred dong.
Does the calculator fetch bank rates automatically?
No. Rates change often and differ by bank and channel; enter the rate currently on offer for an accurate result.
