Formula (Circular 22/2021): semester average = (sum of regular scores + 2 × mid-term + 3 × final) / (number of regular scores + 5); year average = (sem 1 + 2 × sem 2) / 3, rounded to one decimal.

Minimum regular assessments per semester: up to 35 periods a year: 2 · 36–70 periods: 3 · over 70: 4.

Quick answer

Under Vietnam's Circular 22/2021, a semester subject average is (sum of regular scores + 2 × mid-term + 3 × final) / (number of regular scores + 5), and the year average is (semester 1 + 2 × semester 2) / 3. Regular scores 8, 9, 7 with mid-term 8 and final 9 give 8.4. University students enter credits and scores out of 10 to get a 4-point GPA and classification.

How are grade averages calculated?

Vietnamese students and parents recalculate averages every semester to see whether the result is Good or Fairly good, and university students need a GPA for scholarships, study-abroad applications and job forms. The tool follows the exact formulas of Circular 22/2021 for lower and upper secondary school, including the rule that lifts the rating when a single subject drags it down, and converts university scores to letters and the 4-point scale as in the regulation issued with Circular 08/2021.

How to calculate

  1. 1

Pick “One subject”, “Overall rating” or “University GPA”.

  2. 2

One subject: type the regular scores separated by spaces, then the mid-term and final score for each semester.

  3. 3

Overall rating: enter the average of every score-graded subject and how many comment-graded subjects were not passed.

  4. 4

University GPA: enter each course's credits and score out of 10, pick your university's scale (with or without plus grades) and edit it if needed.

  5. 5

Use “Copy result” to share or keep it.

Ratings for secondary school (Circular 22/2021, Article 9)

Examples

One subject, semester 1

Regular 8, 9, 7; mid-term 8; final 9: (8 + 9 + 7 + 16 + 27) / 8 = 8.375, rounded to 8.4.

Year average

Semester 1 at 7.0 and semester 2 at 8.0: (7.0 + 2 × 8.0) / 3 = 7.67, rounded to 7.7.

One subject pulls it down

Eight subjects above 8.0 and one at 3.0 would be Not passed, but since that single subject drops it three levels, the rating is raised to Pass.

A semester GPA

Maths 3 credits at 9.0 (A), Physics 2 credits at 7.5 (B), English 4 credits at 6.0 (C) without plus grades: (12 + 6 + 8) / 9 = 2.89, Good.

Common mistakes

Averaging all scores equally.
The mid-term counts twice and the final three times; divide by the number of regular scores plus 5.
Averaging the two semesters equally.
Semester 2 counts double: (S1 + 2 × S2) / 3.
Rounding at every step.
Only the semester and year averages are rounded to one decimal, not the individual scores.
Using another university's scale.
Some universities use B+, C+, D+ and some don't. Pick the right scale or edit the table.

Who Circular 22/2021 applies to

Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDĐT governs assessment in Vietnamese lower and upper secondary schools. It took effect on 5 September 2021 and was phased in by grade, covering every grade from the 2024–2025 school year.

Subjects such as physical education, arts and experiential activities are graded Pass / Not passed with comments and are not included in averages.

How a university GPA works

A GPA is a credit-weighted average: each course's 4-point grade times its credits, summed and divided by total credits. F grades count until the course is retaken; pass/fail courses are usually excluded.

Frequently asked questions

How many regular assessments are there per semester?

At least 2 for subjects with up to 35 periods a year, 3 for 36–70 periods and 4 above 70 (Article 6). Teachers may give more; the tool accepts any number.

What replaced the old “Giỏi” rating?

Circular 22 rates results as Good, Fairly good, Pass and Not passed. School awards add their own conditions.

Does 8.45 round up to 8.5?

University course scores are rounded to one decimal before conversion, so 8.45 becomes 8.5 (A). The tool does the same.

How do I convert a 4-point GPA to 10?

There is no single official formula; the tool shows the credit-weighted average out of 10 alongside.

Does it work for primary school?

No. Primary pupils are assessed with comments and different levels.

Is the result official?

No, it is for reference; official grades come from the school.
