What is Lorem Ipsum?

Where does Lorem Ipsum come from?
Lorem Ipsum is scrambled Latin taken from Cicero's philosophical work “De finibus bonorum et malorum” (45 BC). “Lorem” is what's left of “dolorem” with its first letters cut off. Because the words are chopped and shuffled, the passage looks like Latin but means almost nothing.
Printers used it as dummy text for a long time; it spread widely in the 1960s through Letraset transfer sheets and later through desktop publishing software. The opening “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit…” became the universal signal for “this is placeholder copy”.
