Quick answer

The lump sum equals the months you qualify for × your adjusted average salary. Each year contributed before 2014 earns 1.5 months and each year from 2014 earns 2 months; leftover months of 1–6 count as half a year and 7–11 as a full year (Social Insurance Law 41/2024/QH15, Article 70). Example: 7 years 4 months from March 2018 at VND 8 million gives 7.5 × 2 = 15 months × VND 8,983,636 ≈ VND 134.75 million.

What is the social insurance lump sum?

This calculator estimates the one-off social insurance payout (BHXH một lần) under Vietnam's 2024 Social Insurance Law, in force since 1 July 2025. Enter each contribution period (from month, to month, salary); the tool multiplies each year's salary by the 2026 adjustment coefficient, averages it, splits years before and after 2014, rounds leftover months the way the law requires and shows the amount with a year-by-year table.

How to estimate your lump sum

  1. 1

Open your social insurance book or the VssID app and find your contribution history: from month, to month and insured salary for each period.

  2. 2

Enter one period per row as month/year (e.g. 03/2018). Start a new period whenever the salary changed; use “Add a period” as needed.

  3. 3

Read the estimated amount, contribution time, adjusted average salary and the number of months of average salary you qualify for.

  4. 4

Check “How it is calculated” and the yearly table (months, salary, coefficient) against the agency's notice.

  5. 5

Use “Copy result”, or “Copy result link” to send the same periods to a family member.

Excerpt from Official Letter 340/BHXH-CSXH of Vietnam Social Security, 3 February 2026 (based on Article 16 of Decree 158/2025/NĐ-CP and Article 10(2) of Decree 159/2025/NĐ-CP). The calculator uses every year's coefficient from before 1995 to 2026. Checked 22 October 2026.

Examples

7 years 4 months at VND 8 million (03/2018 – 06/2025)

88 months, adjusted average VND 8,983,636 (2018 salary × 1.23, 2024 × 1.03…). 7 years 4 months rounds to 7.5 years × 2 months = 15 months. Payout about VND 134,754,545.

With years before 2014 (01/2009 – 12/2025, three salary levels)

01/2009 – 08/2013 at VND 4.5 million: 4 years × 1.5 months, with 8 leftover months moved forward. From 2014 there are 144 + 8 = 152 months = 12 years 8 months, rounded to 13 years × 2 months. Total 32 months × VND 10,158,000 ≈ VND 325,056,000.

Only 7 months at VND 6 million

Less than a year, so you get back what went into the retirement and survivorship fund: 7 × 6,000,000 × 22% = VND 9,240,000, below the 2-month cap of VND 12,000,000.

Common mistakes

Multiplying the last month's salary by the years.
The payout uses the average salary over the whole contribution period, each year adjusted by its own coefficient, not the final salary.
Paying leftover pre-2014 months at 1.5 months a year.
Leftover months from before 2014 move into the post-2014 period and are paid at 2 months a year.
Ignoring leftover months.
1–6 leftover months count as half a year and 7–11 as a full year (Article 5(6)), so 7 years 4 months counts as 7.5 years.
Using last year's coefficients.
Vietnam Social Security republishes them every year; claims settled in 2026 use the table in Official Letter 340/BHXH-CSXH.
Assuming anyone can withdraw after 12 months off work.
The “12 months without contributing and under 20 years” route only applies to people who contributed before 1 July 2025. Those who started from that date can only withdraw in cases such as reaching retirement age with under 15 years, emigrating or serious illness.

Who can claim the lump sum?

Under Article 70(1) of the 2024 law, a worker who has stopped contributing and asks for the lump sum qualifies in any of these cases.

  • Reached retirement age with less than 15 years of contributions (and does not choose a monthly allowance or keep contributing).
  • Emigrating to settle abroad.
  • Cancer, polio, decompensated cirrhosis, severe tuberculosis or AIDS; or work capacity reduced by 81% or more, or a very severe disability.
  • Contributed before 1 July 2025, then 12 months outside compulsory and voluntary insurance, with under 20 years in total.

How the average salary is worked out

For salaries set by the employer, the average covers the whole contribution period (Article 72(2)). Each year's salary is multiplied by that year's coefficient to bring it to today's value, then divided by the total months. That is what this calculator does.

Periods on the state pay scale are averaged over the last years before leaving (5 to 20 years depending on when contributions began), so for those the result is an approximation.

Voluntary insurance: enter the monthly income you chose instead of salary; income coefficients from 2008 match the salary coefficients for the same year.

Should you take the lump sum?

Taking it wipes out your contribution record, so you lose the pension and the health insurance card the fund pays for in retirement. If you can keep contributing (including voluntarily) to reach 15 years, compare with the Pension Calculator first.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the lump sum in 2026?

1.5 months of average salary per year before 2014 plus 2 months per year from 2014, with the average adjusted by the 2026 coefficients. Enter your history for an exact figure.

What do 5 years of contributions pay?

If all five years are from 2014 onward: 5 × 2 = 10 months of average salary, about VND 80 million on an VND 8 million average.

Can I claim with less than one year?

Yes, if you meet the conditions; you receive what was paid into the retirement and survivorship fund (22% of monthly salary), capped at 2 months of average salary.

Where do the 2026 coefficients come from?

Official Letter 340/BHXH-CSXH of Vietnam Social Security, 3 February 2026. 2025 and 2026 are 1.00; before 1995 is 5.81.

Why does my notice show a different amount?

Salaries entered may not match the record, state pay-scale periods are averaged differently, voluntary contributions may include state support, or the claim was settled in a year with other coefficients.

Does the calculator store my data?

No. Everything runs in your browser; a result link only holds the periods and salaries you entered, after the # sign, which is not sent to the server.
