Quick answer
In Vietnam gold is weighed in lượng (also called cây, the Vietnamese tael) and chỉ: 1 lượng = 10 chỉ = 37.5 g, 1 chỉ = 3.75 g, and one troy ounce (31.1034768 g) is about 8.29 chỉ. To value gold, multiply the dealer's price per chỉ by the number of chỉ. 18K gold is 75% pure and 14K is 58.5%. The world price in VND per lượng = USD per ounce × exchange rate × 1.20565.
Key points
- 1 lượng (tael) = 10 chỉ = 37.5 g; 1 chỉ = 3.75 g; 1 kg ≈ 26.67 lượng.
- 1 troy ounce, the unit of world gold prices, = 31.1034768 g ≈ 8.29 chỉ; 1 lượng ≈ 1.20565 ounces.
- Karat is the share of pure gold: 9999 is 99.99%, 18K (750) is 75%, 14K (585) is 58.5%, 10K (416) is 41.6%.
- World price in VND per lượng = USD per ounce × exchange rate × 1.20565, before taxes, fees and shipping.
- Buying and selling straight away always loses the dealer's buy–sell spread.
What are karats, chỉ and lượng?
A gold calculator for buying and selling gold in Vietnam. Convert between lượng (cây), chỉ, phân, grams, troy ounces and kilograms; value any piece by karat (9999, 18K, 14K, 10K…); convert the world gold price in USD per ounce into dong per lượng at the current USD rate and compare it with the local price; and work out profit or loss when you sell. You type in every gold price yourself: the tool does not fetch gold prices, because they differ between dealers and change several times a day.

How to use it
- 1
Pick a task at the top: “Value gold”, “World price” or “Profit / loss”.
- 2
Value gold: enter the weight and unit (chỉ, lượng, phân, grams, ounces), choose the karat, enter the dealer's price and whether it is per lượng, per chỉ or per gram. The weight conversion table appears even before you enter a price.
- 3
For gold below 24K, choose “For this karat” if you have a price for that exact grade, or “For 9999 gold” to estimate from the pure gold content.
- 4
World price: enter the spot price in USD per ounce. The USD rate fills in from the Exchange Rate tool (selling rate); edit it or type one in if you are offline. Add the local price per lượng to see the gap.
- 5
Profit / loss: enter the weight, the price you paid and today's buy-back price; add today's selling price to see the spread.
- 6
Use “Copy” to send the result, or “Copy result link” to reopen the same numbers later.

Karats count in 24ths: 18K = 18/24 = 75%. The actual purity of a piece is on the dealer's assay certificate.
Examples (assumed prices, to show the method)
What are 2 chỉ of 9999 gold worth?
At an assumed VND 15,000,000 per chỉ: 2 × 15,000,000 = VND 30,000,000. If the board quotes per lượng (150,000,000), choose “1 lượng” and the tool divides by 10.
An 18K ring weighing 1 chỉ, with only the 9999 price
With 9999 gold at an assumed VND 150,000,000 per lượng, the 75% ring is worth 15,000,000 × 0.75 / 0.9999 ≈ VND 11,251,125 in gold. Jewellery adds a making charge when you buy and is often discounted when you sell.
World price to VND per lượng
At an assumed USD 4,000 per ounce and VND 26,300 per USD: 4,000 × 26,300 × 1.20565 ≈ VND 126,834,695 per lượng, about 12,683,470 per chỉ. A local price of 135,000,000 would be about 8.17 million (6.4%) higher.
Buying 5 chỉ and selling later
Bought at VND 120,000,000 per lượng (60,000,000 for 5 chỉ); the dealer now buys back at 147,000,000: you receive 73,500,000, a profit of 13,500,000 (22.5%). With today's selling price at 150,000,000, the spread is 3,000,000 per lượng (2%).
Common mistakes
- Valuing an 18K ring at the 9999 price.
- 18K is only 75% gold. Use the dealer's 18K price, or choose “For 9999 gold” so the tool scales by purity.
- Converting ounces at 28.35 g.
- World gold prices use the troy ounce of 31.1034768 g; the ordinary ounce is almost 10% off.
- Mixing up the dealer's buying and selling prices.
- Boards are written from the dealer's side: “buying” is what they pay you, “selling” is what you pay. Your sale price is their buying price.
- Reading too much into the gap with the world price.
- The converted price leaves out taxes, import fees, shipping, refining and local supply and demand, so a gap is normal.
Why is 18K cheaper than 9999?
Karat measures how much of a piece is pure gold; the rest is silver, copper or zinc added for hardness and colour. 24K (9999) is almost pure and soft, used for plain rings and bars; detailed jewellery and stone settings use 18K, 14K or 10K because they are harder.
Two rings that both weigh 1 chỉ can therefore differ by millions of dong: the 18K one holds about 2.81 g of gold, the 9999 one 3.75 g. In “For 9999 gold” mode the tool computes weight × 9999 price × purity / 99.99%. That is the value of the gold itself; real jewellery prices add making charges and each shop's buy-back terms.
Converting the world gold price
The world price is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce of pure gold. Since 1 lượng = 37.5 g = 1.20565 troy ounces, VND per lượng = USD per ounce × exchange rate × 1.20565. The tool takes the USD selling rate from the site's Exchange Rate tool (refreshed at most every 15 minutes); you can replace it with any rate you prefer.
The result leaves out import duty, fees, shipping, insurance, refining and fabrication, and ignores local supply and demand, so Vietnamese prices often differ from it, sometimes by a lot. The optional local price field shows that gap in dong and as a percentage.
The buy–sell spread and profit or loss
Every dealer posts two prices: a lower buying price and a higher selling price. The gap is what one round trip costs you. If you buy today and sell at once, you lose exactly that gap, and the price must rise by at least as much before you break even.
The Profit / loss tab works out your cost (weight × purchase price), today's sale value (weight × buy-back price), the profit or loss and its percentage. Add today's selling price to see the current spread and what an immediate round trip would cost. Jewellery usually has a wider spread than bars or plain rings because of the making charge.

Frequently asked questions
How many grams is 1 chỉ of gold?
1 chỉ = 3.75 g. Ten chỉ make 1 lượng (cây) = 37.5 g; 1 phân = one tenth of a chỉ = 0.375 g.
How many ounces is 1 lượng?
1 lượng = 37.5 g ≈ 1.20565 troy ounces. One troy ounce ≈ 0.8294 lượng ≈ 8.29 chỉ.
What is the gold price per chỉ today?
The tool does not fetch gold prices. Read the price board where you buy or sell (divide a per-lượng price by 10 for chỉ) and enter it to value your exact weight and grade.
How pure is 18K gold?
18K is 18/24 = 75% gold, usually stamped 750. 14K (585) is 58.5% and 10K (416) is 41.6%.
Can I estimate an 18K price from the 9999 price?
Yes, with “For 9999 gold”: value = weight × 9999 price × 0.75 / 0.9999. That is the gold value only; jewellery adds a making charge and the shop's buy-back terms.
Why is Vietnam's gold price different from the world price?
The converted world price excludes taxes, import fees, shipping, refining and fabrication, and local supply and demand. The gap can be positive or negative and changes over time.
What is the formula from USD per ounce to VND per lượng?
VND per lượng = USD per ounce × VND per USD × 37.5 / 31.1034768 (≈ 1.20565). At an assumed USD 4,000 and 26,300: about VND 126.83 million per lượng.
Where does the USD rate come from?
From the site's Exchange Rate tool (the bank's USD selling rate, refreshed at most every 15 minutes). Offline, or to use another rate, type it in.
Is my data stored or sent anywhere?
No. Calculations run in your browser. Only the World price tab asks the site's server for the USD rate; it does not send your numbers.
