“m” = million. Insurance is the employee’s share, paid on the full gross salary. Figures assume a Vietnamese employee who is a tax resident; see the notes for foreign employees below.
How to read the table
Employees pay 10.5% of salary into compulsory insurance: social insurance (BHXH) 8%, health insurance (BHYT) 1.5% and unemployment insurance (BHTN) 1%. Before income tax, you deduct a personal allowance of VND 15,500,000 a month and VND 6,200,000 for each registered dependant; what remains is taxed on a five-bracket progressive scale from 5% to 35%.
In the table, the lowest salary that pays any tax without dependants is VND 18 million (VND 30,500 a month). Each registered dependant lowers the tax, so the "1 dependant" column is always the same or higher than the "no dependants" column.
The figures assume insurance is paid on the full gross salary and there are no tax-free allowances. If your contract sets a lower insurance salary or includes allowances such as lunch or phone, enter them in the calculator.
Vietnam terms in brief
- Gross salary: the contract figure before insurance and tax. Net salary: what reaches your bank account.
- Minimum wage regions (I–IV): Vietnam sets a monthly minimum wage for each of four regions; Region I covers urban Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other large cities. The region rarely changes take-home pay, but it sets the unemployment insurance cap.
- Dependants: children, or a spouse or parent you support, count only once registered with your employer or the tax office and given a tax code.
- Insurance caps: social and health insurance stop at 20 × the base salary (VND 50,600,000), unemployment insurance at 20 × the regional minimum wage.
Notes for foreign employees
- Foreign employees with a work permit and a contract of 12 months or more are in compulsory social and health insurance, at the same 8% and 1.5% rates.
- Unemployment insurance covers Vietnamese citizens only (Employment Law 2025), so foreign employees do not pay the 1% line; their take-home pay is slightly higher than the table.
- The tax figures are for tax residents. Non-residents pay a flat 20% on their salary instead of the progressive table.
