How the benefit on VND 7 million is worked out
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| Average insured salary, last 6 months paid | VND 7,000,000 |
| 60% of the average (before the cap) | VND 4,200,000 |
| Region I cap: 5 × VND 5,310,000 | VND 26,550,000 |
| Monthly benefit (the lower of the two lines above) | VND 4,200,000 |
| Months of benefit (36 months paid) | 3 months |
| Total benefit | VND 12,600,000 |
With an average insured salary of VND 7 million over the last 6 months paid, 36 months of contributions and a job in Region I, you receive VND 4,200,000 a month for 3 months, VND 12,600,000 in total.
This is below the Region I cap of VND 26,550,000, so you get the full 60%. The cap only applies from an average insured salary of about VND 44.25 million in Region I.
After 36 months, each further 12 months paid adds one month of benefit, another VND 4,200,000. 144 months (12 years) give the maximum of 12 months, VND 50,400,000 in total.
The cap: 5 times the regional minimum wage
60% of your salary is VND 4,200,000, below the cap in all four regions (Region I VND 26,550,000, Region IV VND 18,500,000), so you receive VND 4,200,000 a month wherever you worked.
The cap only matters from an average insured salary of about VND 30.83 million (Region IV) or VND 44.25 million (Region I). The insured salary itself is capped at 20 times the regional minimum wage (VND 106,200,000 in Region I).
Conditions and how to claim
- Vietnamese citizens only; foreign nationals on work permits are outside the unemployment insurance scheme.
- The contract ended lawfully; quitting in breach of the law, or leaving when already entitled to a pension, disqualifies you.
- 12 months of unemployment insurance paid in the 24 months before leaving (12 in 36 months for contracts of 1 to under 12 months).
- File within 3 months of leaving at the public employment service centre where you want to be paid, or on the National Public Service Portal.
- Payment counts from the 11th working day after a complete claim; you report your job search every month, and missing 3 months in a row ends the benefit.
Based on Employment Law No. 74/2025/QH15 (Articles 38 and 39) and Decree 374/2025/NĐ-CP, in force from 1 January 2026. This is an estimate; the official amount is decided by the employment service centre.
Frequently asked questions
- How much unemployment benefit after 1 year on VND 7 million?
- 12 to 36 months of contributions give 3 months of benefit: VND 4,200,000 × 3 = VND 12,600,000. The 12 months must fall within the 24 months before you leave.
- How much after 5 or 10 years paid on VND 7 million?
- 60 months give 5 months, VND 21,000,000; 120 months give 10 months, VND 42,000,000 (Region I). The maximum of 12 months, VND 50,400,000, needs 144 months.
- Do I get less outside the big cities on VND 7 million?
- No. VND 4,200,000 is below the cap in every region (the lowest is VND 18,500,000 in Region IV), so the region does not change the amount.
- My salary is VND 7 million but insurance is paid on less. What then?
- The benefit follows the insured salary recorded in VssID, not your actual pay. If insurance is paid only on the Region I minimum wage (VND 5,310,000), you get VND 3,186,000 a month, VND 1,014,000 less.
- Can a foreigner working in Vietnam claim this benefit?
- No. The 2025 Employment Law defines a worker as a Vietnamese citizen (Article 2(1)). Foreign employees with work permits pay social and health insurance but not unemployment insurance, so there is no benefit to claim.
- Is the VND 4,200,000 monthly benefit taxed?
- No. It is paid from the unemployment insurance fund and is not taxable income; you also get a health insurance card while you receive it.
