Vietnam's Lunar New Year (Tết) of the Year of the Goat, Đinh Mùi, starts on Saturday 6 February 2027. Civil servants and public employees get seven days off in a row, from Thursday 4 February (the 28th day of the twelfth lunar month) to Wednesday 10 February 2027 (the 5th day of the first lunar month), under Notice 11483/TB-BNV of the Ministry of Home Affairs. National Day 2027 gives civil servants four days off, from 2 to 5 September.

Key takeaways

  • The first day of Tết Đinh Mùi: Saturday 6 February 2027.
  • Civil servants are off for 7 days, 4–10 February 2027: 5 statutory Tết days plus 2 days in lieu because Tết overlaps a weekend.
  • Private employers choose one of three Tết schedules and must tell staff at least 30 days in advance.
  • National Day: civil servants are off from 2 to 5 September 2027.
  • From 2026, 24 November (Vietnamese Culture Day) is also a day off; in 2027 it is a Wednesday.
  • Counting weekends, civil servants have about 22 days off across the holidays of 2027.

Tết 2027 in detail

Civil servants and public employees

Under Notice 11483/TB-BNV the break runs from Thursday 4 February to the end of Wednesday 10 February 2027:

  • five Tết days under the Labour Code;
  • two days in lieu because Tết falls on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February;
  • Thursday 11 February (the 6th day of Tết) is back to work.

Private-sector employees

Employers pick one of three options, five Tết days in total:

  1. one day at the end of the Year of the Horse (Bính Ngọ) and four at the start of the Year of the Goat;
  2. two days before and three after;
  3. three days before and two after.

If a Tết day falls on the company's weekly rest day, staff get the next working day off instead. The employer must announce its choice at least 30 days beforehand, so expats in private companies should ask HR rather than assume the civil-service dates.

How days in lieu work

Under the 2019 Labour Code, when a public holiday falls on a weekly rest day, employees get the next working day off. That is why the same holiday can produce different breaks at different workplaces:

  • In 2027, 1 May is a Saturday. People who normally have Saturday and Sunday off get Monday 3 May in lieu, so their break is 30 April to 3 May.
  • People who only rest on Sundays already work Saturdays, so they simply take Saturday 1 May off and get no extra day.

The date calculator counts working days between two dates with weekends excluded, which helps when you plan leave around these breaks.

Planning tips if you live in Vietnam

  • Book travel early. The break starts on Thursday 4 February, so trains, buses and flights on 3 and 4 February 2027 sell out first.
  • Expect closures. Many shops, markets and small restaurants close for several days around the first day of Tết, especially in cities emptied by people returning to their home provinces. Stock up beforehand and keep some cash.
  • Count down to New Year's Eve. The lunar New Year's Eve is the night of 5 February into 6 February 2027. The countdown and stopwatch tool lets you set the moment for the family.
  • Check lunar dates for traditions. Many Vietnamese families choose the first outing of the year, shop openings or weddings by the lunar calendar, so colleagues may plan around dates you would not expect.
  • Ask HR early if you work in a private company, because the schedule can differ from the civil-service one.

Long weekends in 2027

Several holidays in 2027 fall on a Friday, giving three-day weekends to people with a Saturday–Sunday weekend:

  • New Year's Day, Friday 1 January: off until Sunday 3 January.
  • Hùng Kings' Commemoration, 10/3 lunar = Friday 16 April: off until Sunday 18 April.
  • Reunification Day, Friday 30 April: with Labour Day on Saturday, the break runs to Monday 3 May thanks to the day in lieu.

If you work Saturdays these breaks are shorter, so check your company's schedule. Demand for hotels and transport rises sharply around these dates. Schools announce their own Tết holidays through the local education departments, usually a few days longer than the civil-service break.
