On a gross salary of VND 20,000,000 a month in Vietnam, with insurance paid on the full salary and no registered dependants, you take home VND 17,780,000 under the 2026 rules. VND 2,100,000 goes to the three compulsory insurance funds and VND 120,000 is personal income tax. Register one dependant and the tax drops to zero, so the net becomes VND 17,900,000.

Key takeaways

  • Gross VND 20m with no dependants: VND 17,780,000 net per month.
  • The employee pays 10.5% of the insured salary: social insurance 8%, health insurance 1.5%, unemployment insurance 1%.
  • In 2026 the personal deduction is VND 15.5m a month and each registered dependant adds VND 6.2m.
  • Taxable income is only VND 2.4m, which sits in the first 5% bracket, so the tax is VND 120,000.
  • The employer pays another 21.5% on top, so the total cost of the role is VND 24,300,000 a month.

Gross versus net in a Vietnamese job offer

The gross figure is what the labour contract states. It includes the insurance contributions and the income tax that are taken out of your pay. The net figure is what actually lands in your bank account after the company deducts compulsory insurance and withholds personal income tax (PIT).

Recruiters in Vietnam quote both styles, so always ask which one a number means. At VND 20m the gap between the two readings is about VND 2.2m a month, more than VND 26m a year.

Gross VND 20m to net, step by step

The example assumes you work in region I (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and similar urban areas), your insured salary equals your gross salary and you have no tax-exempt allowances. You can repeat it with your own numbers in the gross-to-net salary calculator.

Step 1: compulsory insurance

The employee contributes 10.5% of the monthly insured salary:

ContributionRateAmount
Social insurance8%VND 1,600,000
Health insurance1.5%VND 300,000
Unemployment insurance1%VND 200,000
Total10.5%VND 2,100,000

Social and health insurance are capped at 20 times the statutory base salary. From 1 July 2026 the base salary is VND 2,530,000 (Decree 161/2026/ND-CP), so the cap is VND 50.6m. Unemployment insurance is capped at 20 times the regional minimum wage. A VND 20m salary is far below both caps, which is why the region does not change this example.

Step 2: family deductions

Resolution 110/2025/UBTVQH15, applied from the 2026 tax year, sets:

  • a personal deduction of VND 15,500,000 a month;
  • VND 6,200,000 a month for each registered dependant.

Taxable income = 20,000,000 − 2,100,000 − 15,500,000 = VND 2,400,000.

Step 3: the progressive tax table

The Personal Income Tax Law No. 109/2025/QH15 uses a five-bracket table for employment income from the 2026 tax year. The first bracket covers taxable income up to VND 10m at 5%.

Tax = 2,400,000 × 5% = VND 120,000.

Step 4: take-home pay

Net = 20,000,000 − 2,100,000 − 120,000 = VND 17,780,000.

Net pay with dependants

Each registered dependant (a child under 18, or a parent past working age with no or low income, for example) lowers taxable income by another VND 6.2m. At VND 20m, one dependant already pushes the total deductions (VND 21.7m) above what is left after insurance (VND 17.9m), so no tax is due.

VND 40,000,000VND 34,270,000VND 34,890,000VND 35,405,000

Region I, insured salary equal to gross salary, rules in force from 1 July 2026.

How much better off are you than in 2025?

Until the 2025 tax year Vietnam used smaller deductions (VND 11m personal, VND 4.4m per dependant) and a seven-bracket table. For the same VND 20m gross with no dependants:

Tax yearTaxable incomePITNet pay
2025VND 6,900,000VND 440,000VND 17,460,000
2026VND 2,400,000VND 120,000VND 17,780,000

That is VND 320,000 less tax every month, or VND 3.84m over the year.

Negotiating a net salary: what gross do you need?

If you are offered "VND 20m net" with no dependants, the equivalent gross is about VND 22,611,000. Insurance on that is roughly VND 2,374,000 and tax roughly VND 237,000. The calculator has a "Net → Gross" direction that finds the exact figure for your situation, which is useful when an employer budgets in gross and you think in net.

What the employer pays on top

Besides the VND 20m paid to you, the employer contributes another 21.5% of the insured salary:

  • social insurance 17.5%: VND 3,500,000;
  • health insurance 3%: VND 600,000;
  • unemployment insurance 1%: VND 200,000.

The full monthly cost of the role is VND 24,300,000, the figure HR teams use when they set a hiring budget.

When your numbers will differ

  • Insurance on a lower base. Many companies pay insurance on a basic salary and treat the rest as allowances. Less insurance is deducted, so net pay rises, but your future social insurance benefits (pension, maternity, sick pay) are based on the lower figure.
  • Tax-exempt allowances. Some items, such as mid-shift meal allowances within the legal limit, are not taxable income.
  • The regional minimum. The insured salary cannot be lower than the regional minimum wage (VND 5,310,000 in region I in 2026, under Decree 293/2025/ND-CP).
  • Several income sources. Income from a second employer can raise your annual tax at finalisation.
  • Foreign employees. The calculator follows the rules for Vietnamese tax residents with standard contributions. If you are a non-resident for tax purposes, or your contract has special insurance terms, ask your employer or a tax adviser how your pay is treated.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay income tax on a VND 20m salary?

Yes, if you have no registered dependants: about VND 120,000 a month under the 2026 rules. With one or more dependants the tax is zero.

Is a VND 20m salary different in Hanoi and in the provinces?

No. The region only affects the unemployment insurance cap and the minimum insured salary, and a VND 20m salary reaches neither.

My company pays insurance on VND 6m only. What is my net pay?

Insurance falls to VND 630,000 (10.5% of VND 6m). Taxable income is 20m − 630,000 − 15.5m = VND 3,870,000, the tax is VND 193,500 and the net is about VND 19,176,500. Your future social insurance benefits, however, are calculated on VND 6m.

Does the July 2026 base salary increase lower my net pay?

Not at VND 20m. The base salary only sets the cap for social and health insurance (VND 50.6m from 1 July 2026), so only people insured above the old cap pay more.

Is the calculator result exact?

It applies the rates and deductions currently in force, but treat it as an estimate. Your final payslip depends on how your employer declares the insured salary, your allowances and which dependants you have registered.
