Quick answer
Vietnam's maternity benefit for a birth is leave pay at 100% of your average insured salary over the last 6 months for each month of leave (6 months; 7 months for a second child born from 1 July 2026), plus a birth grant of twice the reference level per baby (VND 5,060,000 from July 2026). You need 6 months of contributions in the 12 months before the birth. Example: a VND 12 million salary and a second child in November 2026 give VND 84 million + 5.06 million.
Key points
- Mothers get 6 months' leave (up to 2 before the birth), plus one month per extra baby in a multiple birth (Article 53, Social Insurance Law 41/2024/QH15).
- From 1 July 2026 a second child (one living child already) gives the mother 7 months and the father 10 working days (Population Law 2025, Article 14).
- Each month of leave pays 100% of the 6-month average insured salary; check-up days and paternity leave pay the monthly amount ÷ 24 per day.
- The birth grant is 2 × the reference level per baby: VND 4,680,000 before July 2026, VND 5,060,000 from July 2026.
- Fathers get 5 working days, 7 for a caesarean or a birth before 32 weeks, 10 for twins and 14 for twins by caesarean.

How is maternity pay calculated in Vietnam?
This calculator estimates maternity pay for a birth under Vietnam's 2024 Social Insurance Law (in force since 1 July 2025), the 2025 Population Law and Decree 168/2026/NĐ-CP (from 1 July 2026). Choose mother or father, enter the birth month, the number of babies, your average insured salary and months paid; you get the leave pay, the birth grant, check-up pay and recovery days, with the 6-month condition checked and the 7-month rule for a second child applied automatically. It is written for foreign employees on Vietnamese contracts, who join compulsory social insurance and can claim the same benefits.

7 months × 12,000,000 = VND 84,000,000, plus a birth grant of 2 × 2,530,000 = VND 5,060,000. Total VND 89,060,000 before check-ups and recovery days.
First child in March 2026, VND 8m salary, 5 check-up days
6 months: VND 48,000,000; birth grant at the March 2026 level: VND 4,680,000; check-ups 5 × 8,000,000 ÷ 24 = VND 1,666,667. About VND 54.35 million.

Common mistakes
- Using take-home pay.
- The base is the average insured salary of the 6 months before the leave, as recorded in VssID.
- Assuming every second child gives 7 months.
- Only for births from 1 July 2026 when the mother has exactly one living child at the time.
- Counting 6 months paid long ago.
- The 6 months must fall within the 12 months before the birth.
- Paying paternity leave per calendar day.
- It counts working days and each day is the monthly average ÷ 24.
Who qualifies?
Under Article 50 of the 2024 law, a mother needs 6 months of compulsory contributions in the 12 months before the birth, or 3 months if she has paid 12 months or more and had to rest during pregnancy on medical advice. She still qualifies if her contract ends before the birth. A father only needs to be paying compulsory social insurance when his wife gives birth. Foreign employees with contracts of 12 months or more are in the compulsory scheme and follow the same rules.
What changed for second children in July 2026?
Population Law 113/2025/QH15, passed on 10 December 2025 and in force from 1 July 2026, gives 7 months of maternity leave for a second child and 10 working days for the father. Decree 168/2026/NĐ-CP requires the mother to have one living child at the birth. All 7 months are paid at 100% from the social insurance fund. For a second birth that is twins or more there is no specific guidance yet, so the calculator adds one month per extra baby and flags the result as an estimate.
Claiming the benefit
Give a copy of the baby's birth certificate (or certificate of birth) to your employer within 45 days of returning to work; the employer files with the social insurance agency. If you left your job before the birth, file directly with the agency where you live or online through the National Public Service Portal.
