Mother's maternity pay on VND 20 million
| Case | Total | Months of leave | Leave pay | Birth grant |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First child | VND 125,060,000 | 6 months | VND 120,000,000 | VND 5,060,000 |

Birth in November 2026, reference level VND 2,530,000. The 7 months for a second child apply to births from 1 July 2026 when the mother has one living child. Check-ups and recovery days are in the next table.
Check-ups and recovery after the birth
| Item | Days | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Antenatal check-ups | up to 10 | VND 8,333,333 |
| Recovery: normal birth | 5 | VND 3,795,000 |
| Recovery: caesarean | 7 | VND 5,313,000 |
| Recovery: twins or more | 10 | VND 7,590,000 |
Up to 5 check-ups of at most 2 working days each, paid at the average salary ÷ 24 = VND 833,333 per day. Recovery days are extra days off in the first 30 days back at work if not yet recovered, paid at 30% of the reference level a day whatever the salary.
Paternity pay for a father on VND 20 million
| Wife's birth | Working days | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Normal birth | 5 | VND 4,166,667 |
| Caesarean or under 32 weeks | 7 | VND 5,833,333 |
| Second child | 10 | VND 8,333,333 |
| Twins | 10 | VND 8,333,333 |
| Twins by caesarean | 14 | VND 11,666,667 |
VND 833,333 a day (VND 20,000,000 ÷ 24), taken within 60 days of the birth, in one or several blocks. If the wife is not in social insurance, a father with 6 months paid in the 12 months before the birth also gets the VND 5,060,000 birth grant: VND 9,226,667 with 5 days of leave.
How it is worked out and the 6-month average
A mother with an average insured salary of VND 20 million over the last 6 months, giving birth to one baby (her first) in November 2026 after at least 6 months of contributions in the 12 months before the birth, gets 6 months of leave paid at VND 120,000,000 (6 × VND 20,000,000) plus a birth grant of VND 5,060,000 (2 × the VND 2,530,000 reference level): VND 125,060,000 in total.
If the baby is a second child (she has one living child at the birth), leave is 7 months, so the total is VND 145,060,000, VND 20,000,000 more. A first birth of twins also gives 7 months of leave and a grant for each baby: VND 150,120,000.
Check-up days and the father's paternity leave are paid per working day: VND 20,000,000 ÷ 24 = VND 833,333. Up to 10 check-up days pay VND 8,333,333; a husband on the same salary taking 5 days for a normal birth gets VND 4,166,667.
The insured salary is capped at 20 times the reference level (VND 50,600,000); VND 20 million is below it, so it counts in full.
The average is taken over the insured salary of the last 6 months before the leave, not the last month alone. For example, 3 months at VND 20 million and the 3 months before at VND 19 million average VND 19.5 million, so the 6 months of leave pay VND 117,000,000 (VND 3,000,000 less).
The insured salary is the salary, allowances and regular extras written in the contract. Many employers pay insurance on less than actual pay, and maternity pay is then lower than this table. Check the figures in the VssID app.
Conditions and how to claim
- The mother has paid compulsory social insurance for 6 months in the 12 months before the birth; 3 months if she has 12+ months paid and needed pregnancy rest on medical advice.
- The father only needs to be paying compulsory social insurance when his wife gives birth.
- Foreign employees with a work permit and a contract of 12 months or more are in compulsory social insurance and claim in the same way.
- Still employed: give a copy of the baby's birth certificate to your employer within 45 days of returning to work; the employer files with the social insurance agency.
- Left the job before the birth: file directly with the social insurance office where you live, in person or on the National Public Service Portal.
Based on Social Insurance Law No. 41/2024/QH15 (Articles 50, 53, 58, 59 and 60), Population Law No. 113/2025/QH15 and Decree 168/2026/NĐ-CP. This is an estimate; the official amount is paid by the social insurance agency.
Frequently asked questions
- How much maternity pay for a first child on VND 20 million?
- VND 125,060,000: 6 months × VND 20,000,000 = VND 120,000,000 plus a birth grant of VND 5,060,000, before check-up and recovery days.

- What if I paid in for less than 6 months?

- Is maternity pay taxed?
- No. It is paid by the social insurance fund, not the employer, and is not taxable income, so you receive the full VND 125,060,000.
